Masonry Parge Coatings: New Parging & Parging Repair for Your Concrete Foundation or Block Foundation or Wall

Add a protective and beautiful cement coating to your foundation, wall, or other masonry surface.

Parge coatings are used to cover exterior walls (most often foundations) made of concrete, cinder block, or brick. It is a thin layer of mortar that is applied to walls to create a smooth and attractive surface.  Made of Portland cement (AKA hydraulic cement), as a protective foundation coating it is more durable than stucco and looks great whether it is painted, painted and sealed, or left as-is.

Parging also helps waterproof the surface by adding an extra layer of protection between your home and the elements. When done incorrectly, parging can crack or crumble, affecting the appearance of your house and compromising its ability to withstand rain and snow.  So not only do we apply all-new parge coats, but we also repair parging that’s old, damaged, or incorrectly executed.

Benefits of parging your foundation

You probably already know a parge coat is what you need, but it can help your home in even more ways than you might know.  Below are the main benefits of getting your foundation, wall, or other surface parge-coated.  A parge coat…

  • Looks great
  • Adds a layer of water protection, particularly against windblown rain
  • Increases your curb appeal and property value
  • Creates a smooth, safe uniform texture
  • Eliminates little cracks and holes that can collect dirt and insects
  • Is easier to clean, especially if it’s painted and even more so if it’s sealed
  • Reduces the surface area needed to paint – saving you time and materials
  • Creates a uniform color to paint
  • Holds the existing masonry in place
  • Provides a flat and even surface that allows for further utility or decoration (similar to how you need a flat and solid wall to hang a painting)

What surfaces can you parge-coat?

A parge coat is most often applied to brick, cinder block, or stone, though sometimes it is beneficial to a poured concrete foundation or other surface.

Parging can’t fix a surface that’s already falling apart.  That’s because even though it helps protect structural elements in your home, a parge coat itself isn’t a structural element.  So there are a few prerequisites to applying a parge coat.  First, the underlying surface (e.g. the foundation) must be structurally sound.  If it’s not, repairs may be needed first.  Any concrete or mortar must be fully cured.  The entire surface needs to be clean, for proper adhesion.

What parts of your home might benefit from a parge coat?  Anywhere you see exposed brick, cinderblock, stone, or poured concrete, including:

  • Foundation exteriors (most common)
  • Foundation interiors (less common)
  • Other exterior wall surfaces
  • Block walls, including retaining walls
  • Chimneys
  • Steps
  • Staircases
  • Stoops
